When selecting a dive resort in Bali, it’s worth thinking about the type of diving you want to focus on. The island has several well-known diving hubs, each with its own style:

Most dive resorts are concentrated along Bali’s northeast coast, especially around Tulamben, Amed and Candidasa, where conditions are calm and the diving is reliable year-round. These areas are also close to several shore-entry dive sites, making them ideal for both beginners and experienced divers looking for easy logistics.
Further northwest, Pemuteran is another popular base, though it’s a longer journey—around 3–4 hours by car. Its main attraction is the access to Menjangan Island, known for clear water and gentle wall dives.
Nusa Penida is reached by boat from the mainland and is usually visited on day trips rather than overnight resort stays.
Bali is a year-round destination, but the best diving conditions generally occur from April to November, when visibility is higher and seas are calmer along the northeast coast.
From December to March, occasional rain and wind may reduce visibility, but Tulamben and Amed remain diveable most days thanks to their sheltered coastline.
Bali caters to all levels of divers, and each area offers something slightly different:
Beginners: Tulamben, Amed and Pemuteran are great choices thanks to their calm conditions, easy entries and reliable visibility. These areas are ideal for courses, relaxed fun dives and building confidence underwater.
Intermediate divers: Most of Bali’s dive regions—Tulamben, Amed, Candidasa and Pemuteran—are suitable, offering a good mix of reefs, gentle slopes and slightly more challenging sites for those wanting to progress.
Advanced divers: Nusa Penida is the highlight, with stronger currents, cooler water at times and more dynamic conditions. It’s perfect for those seeking a bit more excitement, including manta rays and seasonal pelagics.
Underwater photographers: Photographers can find excellent subjects everywhere, from macro in Tulamben and Amed to wide-angle opportunities in Nusa Penida and Menjangan (Pemuteran). The best area depends on the style of photography you enjoy.

Dive resort packages in Bali offer very good value compared to more remote parts of Indonesia. Prices vary depending on the number of dives per day, the meal plan, room category and resort comfort level.
Budget–mid range: Around $150–$250 per day, typically including accommodation, 2 guided dives, breakfast, drinking water, tea and coffee.
Higher comfort: Around $250–$350+ per day, offering upgraded rooms, better facilities and often full-board packages with 3-4 dives per day.
Packages include accommodation, diving, breakfast and sometimes even full board, but they can be customized to your needs.
Extras such as equipment rental, national park fees (for Nusa Penida day trips), private transfers and travel insurance are usually not included.
Booking early is recommended, particularly for high season (July–September) and holiday periods. Both Tulamben and Amed offer reliable transfers from Denpasar airport, with journey times of around 2.5 to 3 hours.
