When selecting a dive resort in Raja Ampat, it helps to consider what type of environment you want to be based in. The archipelago is large, and each area offers slightly different conditions:
Resorts range from simple eco‑stays to comfortable beachfront accommodations with their own dive centres. At Karang Travel, we help you compare options so you can choose the setting and pace that match your preferences.
Most resorts are spread across the central region around the Dampier Strait, where currents bring nutrients that support vibrant reefs and abundant fish life. These locations offer reliable access to well‑known points such as Cape Kri, Sardine and Blue Magic.
Other resorts sit on quieter islands such as Gam, Mansuar, and even parts of Waigeo, providing a more secluded atmosphere while still being close to excellent diving.
A smaller number of resorts operate in Misool in the south, a remote area renowned for its colourful coral walls and protected marine zones.
Raja Ampat can be dived throughout the year, but conditions are typically best from October to April, when the seas are calmer in most of the region.
From May to September, the southern part of Raja Ampat, including Misool, may be affected by wind, and some resorts close temporarily. The Dampier Strait remains accessible and offers good visibility during much of the year.
Raja Ampat is suitable for various experience levels. Many reefs in the Dampier Strait and around Gam or Mansuar offer relaxed conditions for beginners and intermediate divers.
Some sites may have stronger currents, especially around exposed pinnacles, so Advanced Open Water certification is recommended if you want to explore the full range of dives. Misool’s reefs are generally accessible to most divers, with calm sections ideal for photography.
Raja Ampat resorts sit mostly in the mid to higher price range due to their remote locations and logistics.
Budget–mid range: Around $150–$250 per day, typically including accommodation, 2 guided dives, breakfast, drinking water, tea and coffee.
Higher comfort: Around $250–$350+ per day, offering upgraded rooms, better facilities and often full-board packages with 3-4 dives per day.
Prices vary depending on room category, meals included, number of dives and resort facilities. Packages generally include accommodation, full board or half board, diving, water, tea and coffee. Extras may include equipment rental, marine park fees, private transfers and insurance.
Because space at many resorts is limited, booking well in advance is recommended, especially from October to April, when demand is highest. Most travellers fly to Sorong, then transfer by ferry or speedboat to Waisai or directly to the resort, depending on the location.
