Indonesia is an impressive country that covers more than 17,000 islands. In addition, its climate, culture and diversity make this destination a unique place to enjoy exploring it.
However, since the archipelago is so extensive, climatic conditions vary greatly from one region to another. So, in order to plan an (almost) perfect trip, you need to know the best times for visiting each area.
In this article you will learn more about the climate of Indonesia and we will help you decide when to travel to each destination. We will also discuss from some of the most attractive places for scuba diving and give you some recommendations for each month of the year.
The climate in Indonesia
In general, Indonesia has a warm tropical climate with two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season.
These are influenced by the well-known monsoons: the northeast monsoon is when the winds come from Asia, more humid air, bringing rains; The southwest monsoon is when the winds come from Australia, drier, giving rise to the dry season.

Dry season (May – October)
This is the best time to visit most of the Indonesian regions, especially the most tourist areas in the west and south of the country, such as Java, Bali, Lombok or Komodo. At this time the climate is warm and sunny and it is less likely to rain.
This is usually the perfect time for outdoor activities such as scuba diving, snorkeling, surfing or hiking. Although if you’re planning on going scuba diving, it’s important to know the right season for each specific destination.
Wet season (November – April)
During these months the humidity increases and the rains become more frequent and intense. However, rains are usually short, often with a storm that lasts 2-3 hours in the afternoon, so it might not affect your trip that much.
It’s important to note that certain regions may be more difficult to travel, especially those in more remote areas or that depend on boat transport.
As for air temperatures, they are quite constant throughout the year, oscillating between 25 and 30 ºC in the majority of the country. In mountain areas they can descend a little more.
The best destinations and when to travel
Due to climatic variations in the archipelago, it is important to know which is the best time to visit each place.
When to travel to Raja ampat
Raja ampat is known worldwide for being one of the richest and diverse marine ecosystems on the planet. Here you can immerse yourself in crystal clear waters and explore colorful coral reefs, as well as swim with majestic mantles, sharks and turtles.
This area of northwest Papua has a somewhat special local climate, and the best time to visit it is, funnily, during the wet station of Indonesia from November to April. These are the months when sea conditions are calmer and it rains the least in the area.
However, Raja ampat can be visited throughout the year, since during the months of greater rainfall (May to August), these are not as intense as in other parts of Indonesia.
If your main goal is to go diving in Raja Ampat, it’s good to know that most options of liveaboard boats are between November and April. Also, the months with highest number of visitors are December and January, with a peak around Christmas.

When to travel to Komodo
Komodo National Park has become one of the main tourist attractions of Indonesia. Home of the famous Komodo dragon, its pink sand beaches and spectacular coral reefs make this place a dream destination for nature and adventure lovers.
The best time to visit Komodo is between April and November, during the dry season. In these months, the weather is more sunny and perfect to explore the islands, snorkel or dive in the beautiful waters of the area.
Particularly the months of April and May are our favorites, because the landscapes are extremely green after the rainy months. July and August, on the other hand, are the months when more travelers visit the area.
As for the best season to see manta rays in Komodo, it is usually between November and March, although these are present in the National Park throughout the year.

When to travel to Bali
Bali is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, known for its impressive beaches, green rice, sacred temples and a surprising local culture.
The best time to visit Bali is between May and October, when the weather is drier and temperatures are pleasant to enjoy the beaches, surf and explore the temples.
On the other hand, if you want to avoid the months of the greatest number of visitors, it is convenient to avoid July, August and Christmas, as well as the Chinese New Year in January-February.
We usually recommend the months of April, May and October, because the weather is acceptably dry but without being in the high season.

When to travel to Sulawesi
Sulawesi is one of the largest and most intricate islands of Indonesia, is known for its mountainous landscapes, exotic beaches and an incredibly diverse culture. Unlike destinations better known as Bali or Lombok, Sulawesi offers a very authentic and less explored experience.
Although the weather varies according to the area, in general, the best time to travel to Sulawesi is during the dry season, from May to October. During these months you can enjoy diving diving in the areas of Bunaken, Lembeh, Togean Islands or Pulau Dua.

Travelling to Indonesia each month
We present you a guide month by month to help you decide which is the best time for your trip to Indonesia according to your plans and preferences:
Travelling to Indonesia in January
January is part of the wet season in most Indonesia, which means frequent rains in the majority of the country. However, places like Raja ampat or Triton Bay are ideal for diving and enjoy a dry season during January.
Travelling to Indonesia in February
February is still a rainy month, but rainfall is usually intermittent. Bali and Sulawesi offer cultural experiences that can be enjoyed even on cloudy days. In addition, the beaches are usually less crowded compared to the high season.
Travelling to Indonesia in March
The weather in March begins to improve gradually. Although it is still part of the wet season, the rains are less intense. This is a good month to travel with fewer people and it is still an excellent time to visit Raja ampat.
Travelling to Indonesia in April
April marks the transition to the dry season, the rains decrease significantly, and the weather becomes more favorable. It is in this month when many liveaboard boats make their expedition trips crossing the country, from Raja Ampat to Komodo, passing through the Maluku Islands and the Banda Sea.

Travelling to Indonesia in May
May is one of the best months to visit Indonesia in our opinion. The weather is already much drier and the summer traveler peaks have not started. This is the perfect time to visit Komodo, because its impressive north area is already accessible to diving boats.
Travelling to Indonesia in June
June is the official beginning of the high season in Indonesia. The weather is ideal to explore the entire country, from the islands of Bali and Komodo to the Sulawesi beaches. However, prepare to find more tourists, especially in popular areas.
Travelling to Indonesia in July
July is full summer season in Indonesia and the conditions are optimal for outdoor activities. Most of diving liveaboards make cruises in Komodo, but if you want to dive in quieter places, it is an ideal month to visit the Halmahera area or the Derawan archipelago in Borneo.
Travelling to Indonesia in August
August is usually the month of greatest tourism peak in Indonesia and the weather is still very favorable throughout the south of the country. It is important to book in advance if you plan to travel in August. Some boats offer cruises around east of Flores island and the Alor area, while others already start operating in Raja ampat.

Travelling to Indonesia in September
September marks the end of the high season, with less tourists in general, although the weather remains excellent. The most interesting cruises this month are around Alor, the “Forgotten Islands” and the Banda Sea.
Travelling to Indonesia in October
October is the transition to the wet season. However, rains are sporadic and should not affect your travel plans too much. This is a good time to explore Bali or Komodo with fewer people. For diving, it’s the best season to visit the Banda Sea and spot hammerhead sharks.
Travelling to Indonesia in November
November marks the beginning of the rainy season in most of Indonesia, especially the southeast zone, from Java to Flores. On the other hand, the main season of diving at Raja ampat begins and you can visit the southern Misool zone, which some cruises combine with the Banda Sea or Triton Bay.
Travelling to Indonesia in December
December is part of the wet season, but it is also the month in which many people travel for the end of the year holidays so there is a peak of tourists. Bali or Komodo are still popular, but you must be prepared for frequent rains. In Raja Ampat December is one of the months with the highest number of visitors.
In summary, Indonesia is a destination that can be enjoyed throughout the year, but planning your trip based on stations and climate is key to getting most of the benefit or to be able to scuba dive in specific destinations.
